Looking back, I think I’ve made the transition from high
school to college quite well. So far this semester, I have learned a lot about
life as a college student. Although I have been using many of my own techniques
I developed in high school, I have picked up a few good tips along the way.
Thinking about it now, it is easy to assess what is working for me and what I
need to change.
The main
personal goal I have for myself in college is to stay focused, and get good
grades. So far this semester, I have
accomplished this. I hope to get good grades on my midterms as well, by proving
how much I’ve learned. Currently I am buried with flashcards, notes, and coffee
to help me prepare for my midterms this week.
In high
school I was never the best at math but recently I realized I could be good at
it if I set my mind to it. After paying close attention in math class and
studying for the test, it was a satisfying feeling getting an A on my first
college test. Since then, I’ve had more of a positive attitude toward math and
it motivated me to keep up the good work.
I guess you
could say so far in college I’ve had a lot of successes. What’s my secret? I
would say my biggest secret is staying organized. I stay organized by making a
weekly schedule, as well as a daily to do list schedule. This makes me aware of
everything I have to do, and helps me figure out when I can fit each assignment
into my schedule. This technique has benefitted me in many ways and I plan to
use it next semester too. Although I have found out what works for me, I have
realized a change I have to make. I’ve noticed that starting my homework late
at night doesn’t work for me. It either ends up as an unfinished assignment or
not my best work. I found that I work the best in the afternoon when I’m not
tired after a long day at school and work.
For the
second semester I plan to have fun, keep up the good grades, stay organized, and
have a growth mindset.
