Campus Safari #4 Visit a CC in a Residence Hall
Although I am not a resident here at Southern, lately, I
have been spending a lot of my time in Hickerson Residence Hall. My friends
Amanda and Joelle dorm here and while spending time in their room I’ve gotten
to know a few of the CC’s in the building. So far I have met the CC on my
friends floor and her name is also Amanda. After asking her questions I found
out that after you can apply to become a CC and are accepted, you have many
responsibilities to keep up with. A CC is supposed to act as a mentor toward
her floor. Also, if there is a problem on the floor or a problem between roommates
it is Amanda’s responsibility to help resolve the issue. I also met another CC,
Jay, he explained to me that the benefit of being a CC is that you get free
living, which is deducted off of your tuition. If I lived on campus I would
definitely consider becoming a CC because I feel like it would be a rewarding experience
and would be a good way to connect with the rest of my floor, as well as dorm. I encourage all
students living on campus to look into this program. Monday, September 24, 2012
College Survival Guide For Incoming Freshman Video Project
As a senior
in high school, what questions did you have about college? Were they answered?
Who did you ask? For my INQ video project I decided to chose the following
topic: College Survival Guide for Incoming Freshman. I picked this topic
because I feel like it could be very beneficial to senior high school students.
All seniors going into college are going to have questions about going onto the
next unfamiliar chapter of their life. And I feel like at this stage of my college
experience, I can help!
College
takes students out of their comfort zone and places them in a different
environment. Scary if you think about it. I know I was nervous going into
college because I didn’t really know what to expect. Even though I am still
adjusting I have learned a lot so far and have came to realize the adjustment
really isn’t that bad once you get the hang of things. This is why I feel like
the points and questions I will include in my video will really help out
incoming freshman.
I plan to walk around campus
asking students at random the following questions: How can you make the most
out of your college experience? Residence Life v. Commuting: which is better?
What advice would you give to incoming freshman, that you wish you knew
starting college? And lastly, how is college different from high school?
This topic is definitely very
important to incoming freshman and I think these questions will bring up many
good points. By creating this video I hope to prepare freshman for college,
answer some of their questions, and prevent them from making the mistakes many
college students do.
I plan on making my video very
interesting, informative, and fun! I’m interested to hear what the students on
the SCSU campus have to say about my questions. I hope everyone enjoys it! Premiers
October 2nd!
I have included a link that provides incoming freshman with a good list of questions to ask while visiting a college campus:
"Time is what we want most, but what we use worst"-William Penn
Over the past week I have recorded everything I did through
out the day, each day. This activity was actually really helpful to me because
I was able to figure out exactly where my time was going and what changes I
need to make for more productive results. I have learned that in college it is
extremely important to manage your time otherwise you could fall behind and put
unnecessary stress on yourself.
The time
management chart helped me to figure out where I could fit in more time for
homework and studying. I found out that it was a waste of time for me to drive
home during my three-hour break on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Now I have changed
my schedule. Instead of wasting time and gas driving back and forth from school
I have decided to stay at school and get my work done in the library. Thus, I’m
taking advantage of the full three-hour break to complete my assignments.
I’ve always
been the type of person to make the most out of my day and get a lot of things
done, simply by, analyzing, itemizing, and prioritizing. Usually I go through
the list of things I plan on doing in my head and think about when I’m going to
fit in time to do them. Recently, I have found it much easier to write out a
schedule for myself. Along with my overall schedule, I have written down a
daily schedule, which includes a list of everyday responsibilities and the time
slots when I plan on doing my work. I am not much a procrastinator, but I feel
like by making a schedule for yourself you are automatically setting yourself
for success. I suggest students who are procrastinators to take advantage of
this technique or simply find another strategy that works specific to
them.
I have included a daily schedule that I find useful:
I have also included a link to a website that has samples of many different kinds of schedules, find the one that best fits you and put it to use!

Campus Safari #3 Health Center

This week I visited the Granoff Student Health Center on
campus. It is pretty easy to find, located on Wintergreen Ave, right across the
street from the winter green building. I observed that the staff seemed
friendly and helpful towards other students who came in as well. While I was in
there I grabbed a few pamphlets addressing health problems college students may
face. I found these pamphlets to be really interesting and I found out some
things I didn’t know before. One of the pamphlets was about energy drinks and
they negative effect they have on the body. I found it interesting because I
know many college students turn to energy drinks to keep them awake in class or
while doing schoolwork. But do they really know how they harm the body? I’ve
learned that energy drinks can you make you feel nervous or irritable, cause
your heart to beat faster and increase blood pressure. I encourage all college
students to visit the health center and pick up a pamphlet of interest to them.
Trust me, it wont be a waste of time!
