Since I’ve started college, many times I had to step out of
my comfort zone into unknown territory. Already, in class, I’ve noticed many
differences between high school and college. In high school I felt like I had a
better personal connection with my teachers rather than in college. I also
found the material to be a lot easier, so I didn’t go for much extra help. But,
when I did need help I didn’t hesitate to ask.
Recently, I
have stepped out of my comfort zone by getting extra help in my math class.
Math has always been a subject that I’ve had to work hard at to get a good
grade. Although I may not understand the material right away, after practice
and a good full understanding I am usually able to grasp the material.
A few
nights ago, I sat at my desk trying out some problems similar to the ones we were
doing in class. I began to get frustrated because I knew how to do them; I just
wasn’t coming out with the right answer in the end. I decided to ask my math
teacher to look over a few of the problems and help me figure out where I went
wrong. I wasn’t used to getting extra help and felt somewhat awkward asking.
Looking back now, I am glad I asked because now I have a better handle on the
material we have been learning about and I feel more confident that I am
capable of getting a good grade in math. Also, problems like ones I got stuck
on will appear on the midterm and I would hate to lose unnecessary points
because I didn’t simply ask for extra help.
I encourage
all students who are having a problem similar to mine to not hesitate to ask
your professor. Believe it or not, most of the time they are more than happy to
help!
